I know I only spent 5 hours with you, but I think I’m in love.
It must have been fate. Spring was out in full-force and there was no way I couldn’t go head over heels for you.
You’ve got all the history of the northeast, but with Southern charm and warm weather. Cobblestone roads, beautiful jewel-toned buildings, cemeteries that are centuries years old…I’m pretty sure I had a goofy grin plastered on my face all afternoon.
Let’s not forgot the well-manicured parks, the cute boutique stores, and the food.
Oh, the food. I’ll admit we only visited one restaurant, but it certainly did not disappoint. I sampled decadently silky she-crab soup, fried chicken that was perfectly crisp, and a $3.50 (!) bloody mary with pickled okra as garnish. Charleston, you must have known that I fall for pickled vegetables.
We walked down King St, passing by historic homes with their ornate gates, water features, and flower boxes. At times I felt like I was in Europe, not the southern United States.
Our walk led us to the water. Charleston, I’m a sucker for water. The whole city, really, is surrounded by water and at the southern tip there is a tree-lined park that feeds into a pier overlooking the harbor.
I think the boyfriend was won over, too. It just so happened that the Blue Angels were performing that afternoon. And he’s kind of obsessed with aviation.
Then, as we were walking back to the car, we stumbled upon a craft beer store. Airplanes and beer in the span of 30 minutes. For him, that equals bliss. You really pulled out all the stops, Charleston, didn’t you?
And Charleston, the only complaint I have? Those damn sweet grass baskets that are sold on every corner. Goodness me, they are expensive. We’re talking $100+ for a medium sized basket. I’ll pass.
Charleston, why did it take me so long to visit? You can be bet I’ll be back.
